We started out for Florence but turned to visit Assisi. The name popped out at me on the map and it reminded me of my dad. He had told me about this place once and about St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy and founder of the Franciscan Order - the first person known to have received the stigmata, bearing the wounds of Christ.
We turned into this walled town, not knowing what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised. It is much like its original days (with a few cars and gift shops added) - stone buildings, narrow walkways, and a large basilica and castle set on the hilltop.
